đ¤ Rappers honoured
Missy Elliot and Queen Latifah have become the first rappers to be awarded National Medals of Arts. Earlier this week, U.S. President Joe Biden awarded the 2022 and 2023 medals in a ceremony at the White House. The National Medals of Arts are the highest honour an artist can be awarded by the U.S. government for those âdeserving of special recognition by reason of their outstanding contributions to the excellence, growth, support, and availability of the artsâ.
This yearâs ceremony was the first time any rapper had been honoured. Missy Elliot and Queen Latifah have both been recording artists for decades. In a tweet following the event, Missy Elliot honoured her colleague, saying Queen Latifah âdeserve[s] all the bouquetsâŚThank you for kicking down doors Queen for me & those after youâ.

Among the other recipients were actress Eva Longoria, singer and actress Idina Menzel and filmmaker Spike Lee.
Addressing the awardees, President Biden said: âAbove all, you are the masters of your craft that have made us a better America with all of you have done.â
đ Fish species rediscovered
A critically endangered fish has been discovered for the first time since 2005. The giant salmon carp, which is from the Mekong River basin in Asia, was believed to be extinct after not being sighted for over 20 years.
In 2020, scientists first heard reports that a fish that resembled the giant salmon carp, nicknamed âthe Mekong Ghostâ, had been caught by fishermen. Unfortunately, that fish was sold by fishermen before scientists could properly investigate and there was no official confirmation.
Years later, however, scientists have finally been able to confirm that the Mekong Ghost is not extinct after fishermen caught three fish and brought in researchers to survey the findings.
According to the researchers, these ârecent observations indicate that the species persists, and that one or more populations of [the fish] inhabit the Cambodian Mekongâ. '
Now that it has been confirmed that the species still exists, scientists have suggested that more research is needed into how to conserve it and ensure its longevity moving forward.

đ¤źââď¸ Sporting prowess
Sport Australia has named six athletes and two general members to join the Sport Australia Hall of Fame, with an official ceremony to be held next month.
The athletes who will be inducted are three-time surfing world champion Mick Fanning, Olympic gold medal-winning sprinter Sally Pearson, Bathurst 1000 champion Mark Skaife, dual-sport Paralympics champion Liesl Tesch, Kookaburras hockey captain Mark Knowles, and lawn bowls legend Karen Murphy. The two to be inducted as general members are businessman Gerry Ryan and late basketball administrator Betty Watson.
According to the Hall of Fame, the members included in this group are âour most revered and respected sporting champions; individuals whose collective results on the greatest sporting stages and across the spectrum may not always have attracted headlines but share a common dignity, integrity, courage and humilityâ.
Love it!
Message from Intrepid Travel
Empowerment through adventure: Intrepidâs Womenâs Expeditions
Intrepidâs Womenâs Expeditions offer female travellers unforgettable experiences that are ordinarily unavailable for regular trips. These trips were created to help break down barriers and misconceptions of traditional tourism in conservative countries by engaging local women in authentic experiences.
Digital creator Lucy Neville, who joined expeditions to India and Morocco, found the experiences transformative. "Intrepid has such strong relationships with local women, and I love that they give back to social enterprises and initiatives that support them." A highlight for Lucy was hiking in Morocco with M'Goun Valley's first female guide, Mama Bia. Lucy's advice? "Do it. I urge you to free yourself from your comfort zone and lean into the magic of these expeditions." |

Fast forward a few years, and weâve got hundreds of thousands of followers on socials, three newsletters, a daily podcast, a game and a website.
We believe thereâs still so much more to do, and part of that is growing our audience.
If you like what we do and want to see us grow, the simplest way is by telling your friends to subscribe to this newsletter. To do that, you can send them this:
đ Community good news
16 students from Queanbeyan High School have graduated from a course that will prepare them to be firefighters of tomorrow. After completing the Secondary School Cadet Program run by the NSW Rural Fire Service, participants are now well across essential fire safety techniques and have gained an appreciation of the work that emergency services do every day across the state.
According to Superintendent Paul Jones, the course teaches students about the âimportant contribution volunteer firefighters make to the local communityâ and âinstils values such as teamwork, leadership and confidenceâ in future leaders. Starting them young!
This graduation ceremony comes less than a week after 45 NSW RFS volunteers were honoured for their service in a ceremony in Deniliquin.
âWith length of service ranging from 10 to more than 60 years, many of these volunteers have dedicated a significant portion of their life to protecting others and deserve our gratitude,â Deputy Commissioner Kyle Stewart said at the time.
