Iconic children's TV show ‘Bluey’ became more accessible this week, releasing Auslan versions of many popular episodes. 

Coinciding with Auslan Day on 13 April, other TV shows, including Gardening Australia Jr, Ginger and the Vegesaurs, Kangaroo Beach, Fizzy & Suds, and Knee High Spies, became Auslan-accessible too.

The change follows a Change.org petition calling for Bluey episodes to be more accessible to deaf and hard-of-hearing children. 

The ABC has confirmed it will continue to roll out more Auslan-accessible content on its streaming platform iview. 

ABC TV executive Jennifer Collins said the organisation was “delighted… to create a more accessible, inclusive and connected experience for all young Australians as they enjoy our much-loved children’s content.”

A man has regained some movement in his fingers after a major surgery in the U.S. state of Colorado. 

Neurosurgery experts at the University of Colorado Anschutz performed a world-leading brain-computer interface (BCI) implantation surgery on the 41-year-old, who was paralysed from the neck down in a car accident a decade ago. According to the university, BCIs can “restore lost motor and sensory function by translating brain signals into actions.”

After the surgery, the patient was able to move his fingers for the first time in years. Over time, the device will interpret his brain’s electrical signals, and learn about the relationship between the brain’s activity and what he wants to do. As a result, he’ll be able to control a robotic arm and use a computer, regaining independence. 

The team was one of the first in the world to implant the BCI at higher levels of the brain. It’ll be implanted for years, meaning researchers will be able to study new information on higher-level brain functions.

Meet Muffin.

Canadian, feline, and the holder of a library card. 

Muffin has been stopping by his local library in Quebec every day for several years. 

Library staff member Dorothy Black told CTV News that Muffin “knows when to show up. He knows when we close [and] which doors to go to”. Librarian Kyra Paquet says that Muffin’s “so wonderful to have at the door… you just see people’s faces, like, light up.”

To honour Muffin, the library gave him a lifetime membership. 

Marie-Louise Eta has become the first woman appointed to manage a men's team in one of Europe's top five football leagues, taking over as interim head coach of Union Berlin in Germany's Bundesliga (the country's top division). 

The 34-year-old played for Germany in youth competitions, and for the first team to win the Women's Champions League, Turbine Potsdam. 

She already held the distinction of being the Bundesliga's first female assistant coach.

At a press conference, Eta said while she understands that “this has a social impact and significance… the most important thing is… we prepare as best as we can to play”. 

You’re never too old to chase your dreams.

Case in point: a 95-year-old former school teacher who published his debut children’s book.

Philip Sekvak published his book ‘Pheepser’s Sunfish Shenanigan: A Mostly True Story’ last year. The Miami Herald reports that since then, he has reconnected with many former students. Spevak said: “Seldom does a teacher realise his/her influence on the pupils he has taught. At almost 96-years-old, it was very gratifying.” 

The outlet also reports that many of his former students, now grandparents, have purchased the book to read to their grandchildren. Spevak also says he intends to donate his books to hospitals.

Tomorrow, there'll be an online Zoom reunion with students who were there during his teaching years.

You might have missed Colombian singer Karol G becoming the first Latina to headline Coachella in the event’s 27-year history.

On stage, the ‘Ahora Me Llama’ singer said: “Before me, there were so many great Latino artists… that gave me an opportunity to be here tonight. So this is not just about me, this is about my Latino community… this is for my Latinos that have been struggling in this country lately… This brings out the best of us: unity, resilience and a strong spirit… I just want everyone to feel proud about where they come from”. 

She delivered an incredible, colourful performance at weekend 1 and will be doing so again tomorrow.
